Sedum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, members of which are commonly known as stonecrops. The genus has been described as containing up to 600 species of leaf succulents that are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, varying from annual and creeping herbs to shrubs. The plants have water-storing leaves. The flowers usually have five petals, seldom four or six. There are typically twice as many stamens as petals. Many sedums are cultivated as garden plants, due to their interesting and attractive appearance and hardiness. The leaves of all stonecrops are edible. Sedum acre was used as a medicinal to treat epilepsy and skin disease, as well as an abortifacient in ancient Greece. Sedum can be used to provide a roof covering in green roofs, where they are preferred to grasses. Most Sedum species are well suited to pot culture and do very well in rockeries.
Sedum morganianum, commonly known as the donkey tail or burro’s tail, is a succulent perennial producing trailing stems up to 60 cm long, with fleshy blue-green leaves and terminal pink to red flowers in summer. Sedum morganianum has been found wild in two ravines at Tenampa county, in central Veracruz, in eastern Mexico and on vertical cliffs of igneous rock in the Tropical Deciduous Forest zone. Due to its restricted geographic distribution, it should be regarded as a micro-endemic species. Sedum morganianum grows well outside or indoors, in very good light but not extreme heat. The plant is best grown in full sunlight for strong growth and to enhance leaf coloration. It requires regular, moderate watering all year, except in winter, when it should be infrequently watered. This plant is especially well suited to pot culture and does very well in hanging baskets, allowing it to cascade over the sides.
