Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia foliosa is a perennial herb native to Ethiopia that’s also known as red hot poker. It has grass-like leaves and produces upright spikes of brightly colored flowers. Kniphofia foliosa has narrow, grass-like leaves that are 10–100 cm (4–39 in) long. The flowers are upright and come in shades of red, orange, and yellow. Kniphofia foliosa grows in mountainous grasslands, in moist and swampy grounds, alongside tributaries, and in areas with sparse vegetation. It favors altitudes between 2050 and 4000 m. Kniphofia foliosa is reportedly used to treat wounds, abdominal cramps, menstrual pains, infertility, malaria, chest complaints, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, cervical and breast cancer or tumors. The roots of Kniphofia foliosa contain compounds that have shown antimalarial activity. The flowers of Kniphofia foliosa produce copious nectar while blooming and are attractive to bees and sunbirds. Ethiopian wolves have also been observed feeding on the nectar.
