Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.
Ficus pumila commonly known as Tickey Creeper, Creeping Fig or Climbing Fig is an evergreen versatile ground cover or climber. New growth is bronze-red. As the common name, “creeping fig” indicates, the plant has a creeping/vining habit and is often used in gardens and landscapes where it covers the ground and climbs up trees and walls. It is hardy down to 1 °C and does not tolerate frost. Therefore in temperate regions is often seen as a houseplant. It is fast-growing and requires little in the way of care. Its secondary roots or tendrils, respectively on certain buildings with fragile mortars or structures made of fragile materials (certain pergola, etc.), can cause structural damage. It is poorly resistant to frost, but can be used as an indoor plant, including a green wall in cold to temperate areas.
