Aloe aurelienii

Aloe aurelienii is a rare Madagascan aloe for serious collectors who love elegant, architectural plants. This species forms a narrow, upright fan of long, strap-like leaves that rise from a short stem and then curve outward in graceful arcs. The leaves are fresh to mid green, sometimes taking on slightly dusky tones in strong sun, and are lined with evenly spaced, sharp little teeth along the margins – just enough armament to give the plant a wild, untamed look without being brutal. There are no widely used common names or synonyms in cultivation yet; enthusiasts simply know it by its scientific name, Aloe aurelienii.

In nature this species is endemic to Madagascar, where it grows rooted in thin, gravelly soils on rocky slopes and in open, seasonally dry woodland. Plants often weave between stones and scrub, their long leaves threading through surrounding vegetation in search of light. This tough habitat has shaped a very resilient aloe: the roots are adapted to fast-draining mineral soils, and the leaves store enough moisture to carry the plant through long dry spells. When conditions are right, a slender flowering stem rises from the heart of the rosette and carries a tight spike of tubular flowers in warm orange-red tones, a magnet for sunbirds and other pollinators in its home range.
