Buddleja is a wonderfully charismatic genus of flowering shrubs and small trees in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, celebrated for its long, nectar-rich flower clusters and its easy, airy garden presence. The genus contains more than 100 species and has a broad native range stretching across tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, Africa, Madagascar and Asia. The name honours the English botanist and clergyman Rev. Adam Buddle, and the plants are especially admired for their fragrant blooms and their ability to draw in butterflies and other visiting insects.

Buddleja pulchella (Buddleja woodii) – Red Climbing Sagewood, Climbing Buddleja; Rooiranksalie, Rooi-Ranksalie, Rooiranksaliehout

Buddleja pulchella, often known as the red climbing sagewood, is a wonderfully distinctive species for growers who enjoy unusual African shrubs with a refined yet untamed character. It is an accepted species in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, with a native range stretching from southeastern Kenya southwards to South Africa. In nature it is associated with forest margins, montane settings, and rocky places, where it grows as a vigorous shrub or climber and brings a graceful, lightly scrambling presence to the landscape.

This is a plant with real collector appeal. Buddleja pulchella develops as a large, sprawling shrub or climbing woody plant, sometimes reaching impressive size, with opposite to subopposite leaves that are simple, entire, and elegantly pointed. The foliage is neat, elongated and smooth-edged, creating a clean green backdrop for the flowers, while the stems carry clusters of bloom in a relaxed, airy arrangement rather than in dense, heavy heads. That balance of slender foliage and open flowering sprays gives the species a beautifully natural, wild-garden charm.

The flowers are what make this species especially memorable. Buddleja pulchella bears sweetly scented blossoms that are white to pale cream or pale orange, each with a deeper orange to yellow throat, creating the soft two-toned effect that makes the species so attractive in close view. The blooms appear in elegant branching clusters, with long slender tubes and small white lobes that give the whole inflorescence a delicate, starry appearance. In habitat, flowering is recorded mainly from June to August, making it a valuable winter-flowering species in southern Africa, with field records showing plants still blooming into August.

For South African growers, international collectors, and gardeners searching for something different, Buddleja pulchella offers a rare combination of elegance, fragrance, and authentic wild provenance. It is the kind of plant that feels both botanical and ornamental: unusual enough for the specialist, yet beautiful enough for any garden with room for a scrambling shrub of character.
