Copaifera is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. The scientific name means “copal-bearer” (or more accurately, copaiba-bearer), since economically important resins and essential oils can be acquired from them. They are also important for production of biodiesel and wood, especially Copaifera langsdorffii. Other species are threatened, mainly by deforestation.
Copaifera baumiana is a South African indigenous species. It grows into a shrub of up to 3 meters. It grows from a woody rootstock with pinnate leaves. During spring it bears small hairy flowers. The attractive red seeds remain attached to the open pods.
