Cymbidium is one of the great classical orchid genera, treasured for its elegant arching foliage, bold flower spikes and long-lasting blooms that can bring colour, fragrance and refinement to a collection for many weeks at a time. Belonging to the orchid family, Orchidaceae, the genus is widely known as the boat orchid, a name inspired by the distinctive shape of the floral lip in many species. It is a genus that bridges the worlds of serious orchid collecting, florist-quality display plants and rewarding long-term cultivation.

Native mainly across tropical, subtropical and temperate parts of Asia, with several species extending into northern Australia, Cymbidium includes terrestrial, lithophytic and epiphytic orchids. This diversity gives the genus remarkable character: some species grow among leaf litter and humus on forest floors, others anchor into rock crevices, while others live on trees in bright, airy habitats. Their growth is typically sympodial, forming clusters of pseudobulbs topped by long, narrow, leathery leaves that create handsome, fountain-like plants even when not in flower.

The flowers are the real spectacle. Cymbidium blooms may be green, cream, yellow, white, pink, bronze, brown, maroon or richly suffused with contrasting markings. Many carry a beautifully patterned lip, and some species are prized for fragrance as much as form. In bloom, a well-grown plant can look both architectural and luxurious, with upright or arching spikes carrying numerous waxy flowers that often last far longer than many other orchid blooms.

For South African growers, Cymbidium can be especially rewarding in cooler, bright regions or in well-managed shadehouse conditions where summer heat is moderated and autumn to winter nights are cool. For international growers, the genus offers options for cool, intermediate and warmer climates, especially when species and hybrids are chosen carefully. From classic large-flowered hybrids to refined Asian species and miniature types, Cymbidium remains a genus with immense appeal for collectors, gardeners and orchid enthusiasts who enjoy plants with presence, patience and seasonal drama.

Cymbidium finlaysonianum – Finlayson’s Cymbidium

Cymbidium finlaysonianum, also known as Finlayson’s Cymbidium, is a dramatic tropical orchid species for collectors who appreciate bold colour, cascading flower stems and genuine botanical character. This is not a shy orchid in bloom; mature plants can produce long arching to pendulous racemes carrying numerous star-shaped flowers, each one richly coloured in warm olive-yellow, golden bronze and chestnut-brown tones with a striking white lip marked in deep magenta-red and lit by a soft yellow throat.

Native from Indo-China through Malesia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Moluccas and the Philippines, Cymbidium finlaysonianum is a warm-growing species associated with humid tropical and coastal habitats. In nature it is often found growing as an epiphyte on large trees or old cultivated trees, and may also occur on exposed rocks, cliffs and limestone outcrops where roots can grip into pockets of humus and organic debris.

The plant forms robust pseudobulbous growths with leathery, strap-like green leaves that create a handsome, architectural clump even when not in flower. The floral display is the real prize: long brownish stems carry multiple open blooms among the foliage, with narrow, elegant petals and sepals that radiate outward in a starry form. The flowers are typically yellow-green to olive-gold, heavily suffused or shaded with reddish-brown to maroon, while the lip is bright white with bold red-purple patches and a glowing yellow centre, giving the flowers a vivid tropical contrast.

In habitat, Cymbidium finlaysonianum is generally spring flowering, producing its fragrant blooms on mature growths when conditions are warm, bright and seasonally well defined. For South African growers in frost-free, coastal or warm protected areas, it is especially appealing as a species Cymbidium with a more tropical personality than the cool-growing florist types. International growers with warm greenhouses, orchid houses or bright sheltered growing areas will value it for its impressive pendant habit and richly patterned flowers.

These seeds are best suited to experienced orchid growers, specialist collectors and propagation enthusiasts. Like most orchid seed, Cymbidium finlaysonianum seed is extremely fine and naturally requires symbiotic or sterile flasking methods rather than ordinary sowing in soil. For patient growers or those using laboratory-style orchid propagation, it offers the exciting opportunity to raise a distinctive Asian Cymbidium species from seed and develop a collection with true botanical depth.
