Cyrtanthus belongs to the Amaryllidaceae, the amaryllis family, and is one of Africa’s most captivating perennial bulb genera. It includes 59 accepted species and is especially rich in southern Africa, where it occupies an astonishing range of habitats, from fynbos and rocky mountain slopes to grassland, thicket and even cliff faces. The genus is celebrated for its extraordinary variety: some species are evergreen, others deciduous; some grow in summer-rainfall regions, others in winter-rainfall areas; and the flowers range from slender and tubular to broad and flaring, in shades of white, cream, yellow, pink, orangered and scarlet. Even the name Cyrtanthus hints at its beauty, coming from Greek words meaning “curved flower.” What makes Cyrtanthus so compelling to growers is that it combines wild South African character with real ornamental drama. Many species are excellent container subjects, some are scented, some have beautifully exposed bulbs or twisted foliage, and a few are famed as “fire lilies,” bursting into flower after veld fires. It is a genus with both elegance and ecological intrigue, which is exactly why it holds such enduring appeal for collectors, bulb enthusiasts and gardeners alike.

Cyrtanthus tuckii var. viridilobus

For bulb collectors and wildflower growers looking for something truly distinctive, Cyrtanthus tuckii var. viridilobus is a superb South African bulb with real character. This is not a bulky or coarse plant, but a refined, elegant species that makes its impact through form and colour: slim pinkish stems rising cleanly above the foliage, each carrying a graceful cluster of long, pendant, tubular flowers in vivid coral-red to scarlet tones, finished with subtly greenish lobes at the tips. It has the kind of poised, botanical beauty that appeals just as strongly to specialist collectors as it does to gardeners wanting something rare and memorable in a bulb collection.

Native to South Africa, this variety is regarded as a South African endemic and is recorded from the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. It is a bulbous geophyte associated with the subtropical biome, and published observations place it in high grassland settings in the Amatola region, where it can make an especially striking display under open conditions.

What makes this plant especially desirable is the flower form. The blooms are narrow, elongated and beautifully drooping, creating a fountain-like effect when several stems flower together. The colour is rich and luminous, sitting between salmon-red, coral-red and scarlet depending on the light, while the small greenish-yellow tips add an unusual finishing touch that gives this variety extra collector appeal. Fine, narrow, grass-like leaves complete the look, making the whole plant feel neat, sculptural and exceptionally elegant.

In habitat, this variety appears to flower in spring to early summer. A SANBI-linked field account recorded it flowering in late September after fire and specifically noted that this was at least a month earlier than its normal season, which supports placing its usual flowering time around mid- to late spring, often extending toward early summer. The same account also highlights how strongly it can respond to fire and renewed light, an especially interesting trait for enthusiasts of South Africa’s fire-adapted bulb flora.

For South African growers, this is a wonderful way to add a genuine indigenous treasure to a grassland or bulb collection, while international buyers will appreciate it as a rare and eye-catching species with unmistakable South African flair.
