Dionaea is a genus that has earned a kind of botanical celebrity status for doing something plants “shouldn’t” do – move with purpose. Best known for the Venus flytrap, Dionaea has evolved a rapid snap-trap that closes in a fraction of a second, turning an ordinary leaf into a living, spring-loaded hunting tool. It’s not aggression, though; it’s survival, a clever workaround for life in soils so poor in nutrients that catching insects becomes the plant’s shortcut to nitrogen and minerals.

Remarkably, Dionaea is a tiny genus in terms of diversity, with its fame resting on a single species, Dionaea muscipula, and the incredible range of cultivated forms selected from it. From deep red rosettes to saw-toothed margins and oversized “big mouth” traps, growers around the world have revealed just how much variation can be coaxed from one wild species – making Dionaea a playground for collectors and a gateway plant for anyone curious about carnivory.

In nature, Dionaea is endemic to a very specific corner of the world: the coastal plain wetlands of North and South Carolina in the United States. There it grows in sunny, acidic bogs and wet savannas, often in habitats shaped by seasonal water and periodic fire. That wild origin explains its love of bright light, pure water, and nutrient-poor substrates – and why, when treated like a true bog plant, it becomes one of the most rewarding carnivores to grow, whether in South Africa or anywhere else.

Dionaea muscipula ‘Scarlet Bristle’

Common name: Venus flytrap (cultivar). Synonyms: None in botanical use (Dionaea muscipula is the accepted species name; ‘Scarlet Bristle’ is a cultivated selection).

Dionaea muscipula ‘Scarlet Bristle’ is a dramatic Venus flytrap cultivar prized for its richly coloured traps and its distinctive “bristly” look. Under strong light, the traps deepen into glowing scarlet to burgundy tones, creating a bold contrast against the surrounding green to red-flushed petioles. This is the kind of flytrap that looks like it’s been lacquered – compact, intense, and instantly eye-catching in any carnivorous plant collection.

The plant forms a low rosette of hinged snap-traps armed with trigger hairs and an impressive fringe of cilia (the “teeth”) along the trap margins. In ‘Scarlet Bristle’, those marginal teeth often appear more pronounced and spiky, giving the traps a fierce, textured silhouette – especially when the traps are fully coloured. Like other Dionaea, it grows from a short underground rhizome and produces successive flushes of traps through the warm season, with colour and form strongest in bright conditions.

In nature, Dionaea muscipula is endemic to a very small region of the coastal plain of North and South Carolina in the United States, where it grows in nutrient-poor, acidic, permanently moist bogs and seepage wetlands. Cultivars like ‘Scarlet Bristle’ share the same fundamental needs as the wild species, making them excellent for growers in South Africa and abroad who can provide bright sun, pure water, and consistently damp, acidic media. Flowering typically occurs in spring to early summer, sending up tall stems topped with starry white flowers – beautiful, delicate, and held well above the traps – followed by small black seeds when pollinated.
