Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa graminifolia (Herschelia graminifolia, Herschelia coelestis, Herschelianthe graminifolia) – Grass Disa, Blue Disa; Bloumoederkappie

Disa graminifolia, the enchanting Blue Disa, is one of South Africa’s most captivating terrestrial orchids, prized for its cool violet-blue blooms, elegant white floral centres and dramatic deep-purple markings. Native to the Cape Floristic Region and extending from the Western Cape into the Eastern Cape, this species is associated with sunny sandstone slopes, mountain fynbos and well-drained coastal habitats, where it appears like a jewel among grasses and low shrubland during the warm end of the season.

This slender, tuberous orchid produces fine, grass-like leaves during its active winter growth phase, then sends up graceful flowering stems that carry exquisite blue to lavender-violet blooms. Each flower has a delicate orchid structure with wing-like outer segments, a hooded upper sepal, a white central column and richly contrasting violet-purple lip markings, often lifted further by small yellow-green accents in the throat. In a group planting, the effect is exceptionally refined: a cluster of bright blue, white and purple flowers held above fine stems, giving a light, airy, almost jewel-like presence.

In habitat, Disa graminifolia flowers from late summer into early autumn, generally from January to March, often after the leaves have died back. This unusual rhythm makes it especially fascinating for collectors and specialist growers, as its flowers arrive when many winter-growing Cape bulbs and orchids are entering dormancy. It is a rewarding species for patient enthusiasts who appreciate botanical detail, seasonal growth cycles and the challenge of cultivating rare Cape orchids from seed.

For South African growers, this is a superb addition to a specialist fynbos, orchid or winter-rainfall collection. For international collectors, Disa graminifolia offers a highly desirable opportunity to grow a true Cape orchid with striking blue-violet flowers, a colour range always treasured among orchid lovers. As with many terrestrial orchids, the seed is fine and specialist germination methods may be required, making it best suited to experienced growers, orchid hobbyists, conservation-minded collectors and adventurous seed raisers.
