Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.
Disa marlothii
Disa marlothii, also known as Marloth’s Disa, is a rare and exceptionally beautiful South African terrestrial orchid, prized for its vivid colour, elegant floral form and strong collector appeal. Native to the Western and Eastern Cape, this species occurs in mountain fynbos regions such as the Hex River Valley, Koue Bokkeveld, central Cederberg and Tsitsikamma Mountains, where it is associated with rocky streamside habitats and cool, seasonally moist mountain conditions.
This striking species produces slender reddish-brown flowering stems rising above narrow green leaves, carrying a graceful display of bright pink orchid flowers. Each bloom has broad, wing-like lateral segments, a long central lower petal and a distinctive hooded upper sepal marked with deeper magenta-pink spots and warm yellowish throat detail. In a well-grown group, the plants create a lively and floriferous cluster of open blooms, with the spotted hoods and rich pink tones giving the display a refined yet eye-catching character.
The flower colour is typically vivid rosy pink to magenta-pink, often with darker pink spotting, red-flushed centres and subtle cream to yellow markings within the hood. A few unopened buds add further interest, but the open flowers are the true highlight, presenting a charming, butterfly-like arrangement that makes Disa marlothii stand out among South African orchids.
In habitat, flowering is associated with the Cape summer season, when suitable moisture persists along rocky streams and mountain seeps. Its combination of elegant form, bright colour and naturally restricted distribution makes it especially desirable for serious orchid collectors, indigenous plant enthusiasts and growers who appreciate rare Cape flora with genuine botanical distinction.
For South African growers, Disa marlothii is a remarkable indigenous orchid with strong regional appeal and exceptional ornamental value. For international collectors, hobbyists and specialist seed growers, it offers the chance to cultivate a rare Cape species with vivid pink flowers, striking markings and true collector status.
