Eulophia is a fascinating and highly varied genus in the orchid family, Orchidaceae, bringing together some of the most adaptable and characterful terrestrial orchids of the tropics and subtropics. Eulophia is an accepted genus of perennials, native across tropical and subtropical regions and currently lists 286 accepted species. In Africa, the genus is especially rich and diverse, occurring in habitats ranging from fynbos to semi-arid regions and coastal dunes to grasslands, swamps and tropical forests, with sub-Saharan Africa and the western Indian Ocean islands forming a major centre of diversity. Many species grow from underground corms, tubers or pseudobulbs, producing pleated leaves and elegant flower spikes that may carry yellow, green, brown, cream, pink, purple or richly marked blooms. Some, such as Eulophia speciosa, are rewarding pot plants with bright yellow flowers, while others, such as Eulophia horsfallii, can become magnificent, tall-growing garden or container specimens with large purple flowers.
Eulophia hians var. nutans (Eulophia aemula, Eulophia amajubae, Eulophia barbata, Eulophia carunculifera, Eulophia clavicornis nutans, Eulophia decurva) – Drooping-Yawning Harlequin
Add a beautifully refined African terrestrial orchid to your collection with Eulophia hians var. nutans, a graceful and highly collectable member of the orchid family, Orchidaceae. This striking variety has a wide natural range from Ethiopia southwards through Africa to South Africa, also extending to Madagascar and the south-western Arabian Peninsula. Within South Africa it is recorded from the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, making it a wonderful choice for growers interested in indigenous orchids, African geophytes and plants from seasonally dry tropical and subtropical habitats.
This variety produces slender upright flowering stems from underground pseudobulbous growth, carrying an elegant arrangement of nodding orchid flowers and tapered buds. The blooms are beautifully patterned, with dusky maroon to reddish-purple outer segments, pale pink to whitish upper petals and a prominent violet-purple lip. The lip is especially attractive, showing a pale cream to white textured central crest, often speckled or marked with deeper purple, giving each flower an intricate, jewel-like quality that rewards close inspection.
In habitat, Eulophia hians var. nutans flowers mainly from the warmer spring and summer growing season, often extending into midsummer depending on locality and rainfall. Its natural rhythm makes it especially appealing to growers who enjoy seasonal terrestrial orchids that emerge, flower and rest in tune with their environment. When grown as a group, the upright green stems, wine-coloured outer tepals, pale pink floral wings and richly purple lips create a delicate yet dramatic display with a distinctly wild African orchid character.
For South African growers, Eulophia hians var. nutans is a rewarding addition to indigenous orchid collections, grassland and savanna-inspired displays, and specialist geophyte collections. International collectors and hobbyists will appreciate it as an unusual African orchid with elegant colouring, compact floral detail and strong botanical interest. As with most orchid seed, germination is best approached through sterile flasking or specialist orchid propagation methods, followed by careful establishment in a well-drained terrestrial orchid mix with bright filtered light, moisture during active growth and a drier rest once growth naturally slows.
