The Hooded Pitcher Plant is a very attractive and unusual pitcher plant; its lid forms a domed canopy over the mouth of the pitcher to create a hood. These pitchers are generally green with a coppery red colour near the upper portions of the pitcher and have white translucent windows on the upper back part. The pitchers grow vertically and will usually reach an average height of 12-15 inches. Sarracenia is one of the most efficient of all carnivorous plants, consuming vast numbers of insects. It lures its prey by secreting nectar around the lip of the pitcher; the nectar paralyses the insect and it falls into the tube, downward pointing hairs help prevent their escape. Once the insect reaches the bottom it is dissolved and the plant absorbs the nutrient value. Sarracenia are native to the wet Savannah’s in the southeast USA, from north-eastern Florida to eastern Mississippi. Typical summer temperatures where they grow naturally are in the mid 90’s F. Winter temperatures can be below freezing at times.
