The Sceletium genus is placed in the Mesembryanthemaceae family. Members of this family are referred to as Mesembs. The generic name Sceletium is derived from the Latin sceletus, referring to the prominent leaf veins that persist as the skeleton-like structure of the dry leaves. The genus contains 8 species and members are easily recognized by the persistent dry leaves that become skeletonized. In dry periods these dry leaves enclose the young leaves protecting them from harsh environmental conditions. They grow well in rockeries and pots.

Sceletium tortuosum commonly known as Kanna or Kougoed is an indigenous succulent herb. It has been used as an ethnobotanical with mind-altering properties for many, many centuries in many tribes, especially from South Africa, though the earliest recorded use of the Kanna plant dates back to the 17th century. Kanna curbs anxiety and tension, and elevates the users mood to a much less stressful state, and in larger doses a state of euphoria can be attained. The Kanna plant can be chewed after an easy fermentation process, and has also been known to be made into teas and tinctures. It can also be smoked with the addition of other herbs, but is available here in seed form. You’ll have to grow the plants, which is easy when following our growing & harvesting instructions. In large doses Kanna can be intoxicating, but the plant is not hallucinogenic and no severe or adverse side effects are associated with it according to known documentation.
