Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia benguellensis is a perennial plant native to Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. It belongs to the Kniphofia genus, which includes other species commonly known as red hot pokers. This plant features grass-like leaves and produces tall spikes of vibrant flowers in shades of red, orange, or yellow. The flowers are rich in nectar, attracting bees, sunbirds, and various other pollinators. Kniphofia benguellensis thrives in full sunlight and well-drained, fertile soil, and is relatively low-maintenance, making it easy to grow. It is non-toxic and safe around both pets and humans.
