Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia fibrosa, commonly known as the Yellow Berg Poker, is a plant with pale yellow flowers and grass-like leaves found in the Eastern Cape and Natal Midlands of South Africa. Its keeled, arching leaves are grass-like in appearance. The plant produces spreading buds and drooping flowers, blooming from late summer, between January and March. It grows on damp, grassy slopes at elevations up to 2000 meters. Kniphofia fibrosa makes an attractive addition to gardens, adding vibrant colour or making a bold statement. It can also be used as a cut flower.
