Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia umbrina, commonly known as the Eswati Poker, is native to an area near Forbes Reef in Eswatini, just north of Mbabane. This herbaceous perennial can grow up to 1.8 meters tall. Its stems emerge from a thick rhizome, with 6 to 8 leaves per stem. The flowers are brown, mildly fragrant, and form a raceme. It shares similar characteristics with Kniphofia typhoides. The species is found in sourveld, rocky grasslands within a temperate climate. The soils in the area are acidic, rich in clay and organic matter, and contain serpentine. The species is observed to cover a distribution area of approximately 40 square kilometers. Its habitat spans across Swazi Nation Land and the Hawane Nature Reserve.
