Malephora, belonging to the Aizoaceae family, is a genus of succulent plants in the ice plant family. There are 13 to 17 species in the genus, many of which are known commonly as mesembs. They are native to Africa. During the apartheid era, South African scientists used it to create a chemical poison.
Malephora crassa, commonly known as Gross Fingerfig and synonymously known as Hymenocyclus crassus, is a South African endemic species found in the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces. It grows into a creeping, succulent shrub, rooting at almost every node, forming densely leaved mats of up to 1 m diameter. From winter to spring it produces striking long yellow flowers.
