Lagerstroemia is a genus of around 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs in the Lythraceae family. They are native to the Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and other parts of Oceania and are widely cultivated in warmer climates around the world. They are collectively known as Crape Myrtles.
Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as Queen’s Crepe-myrtle, Banabá Plant, Pride of India, Queen’s Flower or Jarul, is a small to medium-sized to large deciduous tree which bears beautiful, attractive flowers in profusion in colours ranging from bright pink to light purple. It is native to tropical southern Asia. Flowering season is from spring to autumn with two main flushes, one in spring and one in late summer to autumn. Medicinally a decoction of leaves is used in diabetes, the seeds are narcotic, the bark and leaves are purgative, the roots are astringent, stimulant and used to lowers fever. In Manipur, its fruit is locally applied to treat mouth ulcers.
