Roella is a genus of small shrubs found mainly in the southwestern Cape of South Africa. Only one of the twenty-four species extends into the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Plants grow mainly on stony mountain slopes. Its large blue flowers are borne on the tips of branches in groups or singly. The best known species in this genus is Roella ciliata.
Roella incurva is a South African endemic flowering perennial variable, sturdy and branched shrublet up to 40cm with whitish, hairy stems. The leaves, often in tufts, are narrow and incurved with prickly comb-like teeth. Blue to blue-grey bell-shaped flowers, 2-5cm long; lobes are often marked with dark blotches; flowers solitary or in groups of 2-3; flowers emerge from a bulging cluster of greenish leaf-like bracts with coarse white bristles. Flowers more profusely after fire.
