Sempervivum octopodes, sometimes listed as Sempervivum octopodeum and affectionately known as the “Octopus Houseleek,” is a fascinating alpine succulent originating from limestone ridges and mountain slopes of the Balkan region. What makes this species truly distinctive is the way it produces its offsets: each rosette sends out slender, elongated runners that resemble gently reaching arms, giving the plant a dynamic, living form that slowly creeps and curls through rockwork. In South African gardens, this growth habit is particularly striking in crevice plantings, drystone walls and shallow stone bowls where the plant can naturally weave into cracks and contours.

The rosettes themselves are medium to small in size, with smooth, pointed leaves that glow in fresh lime to apple-green tones throughout much of the year.
