The genus Zaluzianskya, often celebrated for its enchanting evening fragrance and intricate floral displays, is a captivating member of the Scrophulariaceae family and is almost entirely endemic to southern Africa. Commonly known as night phlox or drumsticks, these annuals and perennials are admired for their delicate, often star-shaped flowers that unfurl in the late afternoon or evening, releasing a sweet, heady scent that attracts nocturnal pollinators such as moths. Their blooms frequently feature striking contrasts—pure white petals with deep purple reverses, or vivid reds edged in white—creating a dazzling effect when the flowers turn to follow the fading light. Found across a range of habitats from mountain slopes to sandy flats, Zaluzianskya species have adapted to South Africa’s diverse climates, offering not only ornamental charm but also fascinating insights into the intricate relationships between plants and their pollinators. With their poetic beauty and twilight allure, they have secured a special place in both natural landscapes and cultivated gardens.

Zaluzianskya katharinae, commonly known as Bushveld Drumsticks, is a South African endemic perennial found in the Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West provinces. Zaluzianskya katharinae is a hardy, evergreen, drought-resistant, herbaceous shrublet with coarsely-toothed, sticky, grey leaves. Sporadically throughout the year, but mostly during summer and autumn it produces delightfull white flowers with red on the reverse. During the day, the flowers are closed and resemble small, pinky-red drumsticks, hence the common name. They then open into beautiful white flowers in low light conditions, at dusk and are pollinated by an Emperor Moth. Lovely in a rockery or in a grassland garden. Occurs naturally on the Witwatersrand. This plant, which grows to 60cm tall, will tolerate light shade but does best in a sunny position. Plant in well-drained soil with little to moderate watering.
