The genus Adansonia, best known as the legendary baobabs, comprises a small group of iconic, long-lived trees native to Madagascar, mainland Africa, Australia and offshore islands, where they dominate dry landscapes with their massive swollen trunks and sparse crowns. Adapted to survive extreme heat, drought and poor soils, baobabs store water in their trunks, shed their leaves in the dry season, and produce large, often night-blooming flowers followed by hard-shelled fruits filled with nutrient-rich pulp and remarkably durable seeds. For South African growers, Adansonia offers exceptional potential as water-wise feature trees, container specimens and striking baobab bonsai, rewarding patience with sculptural beauty, resilience and a powerful sense of age and place in the garden.
Adansonia perrieri, or Perrier’s Baobab, is among Madagascar’s rarest baobabs, restricted to scattered populations in the north-west where karstic limestone and dry forest create a dramatic, seasonally arid landscape. It forms an elegant, bottle-shaped trunk with smooth grey bark and a poised, elevated crown. As with all baobabs, juvenile foliage can be simple, while adult leaves become palmately divided, appearing with the rains and dropping as the dry season returns.
The flowers are large and pale, typically creamy-white with long, showy stamens, opening in the evening and fading by the next day. In habitat, the bloom period generally aligns with the onset of summer rainfall from late spring onwards, with fruiting that carries into midsummer. The heavy-walled fruit protects the seeds, which are well adapted to seasonal, dry conditions.
Perrier’s Baobab is a superb candidate for container culture in South Africa, thriving in heat and high light with a mineral, quick-draining mix. Scarify and soak seeds before sowing to speed germination, keep warm and bright, and water deeply but infrequently during active summer growth. Reduce watering in winter dormancy and protect from frost. These baobab seeds for sale are ideal for collectors seeking a critically rare Malagasy species that adapts exceptionally well to pot culture and rewards patience with stately form and character.
Germination: Adansonia perrieri seeds respond well to light scarification followed by a warm water soak for 12 to 24 hours. Sow into a sterile, sandy or gritty propagation mix with excellent drainage, placing seeds shallowly and maintaining consistent warmth and bright light. Keep humidity moderate and moisture light, avoiding any prolonged saturation of the medium.
Care: Grow seedlings in full sun or very bright light to promote compact, robust growth and a swelling trunk. Water deeply but infrequently in summer, reducing significantly in winter when the plant is dormant and leafless. Always use a fast-draining, mineral-rich mix and protect from frost and cold, wet conditions. This critically rare Malagasy baobab adapts well to container culture in South Africa and should be grown with care as a long-lived specimen.
