The genus Adansonia, best known as the legendary baobabs, comprises a small group of iconic, long-lived trees native to Madagascar, mainland Africa, Australia and offshore islands, where they dominate dry landscapes with their massive swollen trunks and sparse crowns. Adapted to survive extreme heat, drought and poor soils, baobabs store water in their trunks, shed their leaves in the dry season, and produce large, often night-blooming flowers followed by hard-shelled fruits filled with nutrient-rich pulp and remarkably durable seeds. For South African growers, Adansonia offers exceptional potential as water-wise feature trees, container specimens and striking baobab bonsai, rewarding patience with sculptural beauty, resilience and a powerful sense of age and place in the garden.

Adansonia za, commonly referred to as the Malagasy Baobab or Za Baobab, is one of Madagascar’s most striking and charismatic baobab species, instantly recognisable by its massive, often multi-stemmed trunk and sculptural form. The trunk is typically swollen, bottle-shaped to columnar, sometimes appearing fused or spiralled, and covered in smooth to lightly textured grey-brown bark that serves as a vital water reservoir during long dry seasons. Mature specimens form an imposing silhouette in the landscape, crowned by a broad canopy of stout branches that may be leafless for much of the year, adding to the species’ dramatic presence.

This species is endemic to Madagascar, where it occurs naturally in dry deciduous forests, open woodland and dry grassland regions, often on well-drained sandy or rocky soils. Adansonia za is exceptionally well adapted to seasonal drought, thriving in areas with pronounced wet and dry periods. During the growing season, it produces palmately compound leaves that lend a surprisingly soft, tropical appearance to the otherwise rugged trunk. In cultivation, it is prized both as a long-lived landscape tree in suitable climates and as a distinctive caudiciform subject for collectors and bonsai-style growers.

Flowering typically takes place during the warmer months, often at the onset or height of the rainy season. The large, showy flowers are borne singly and are usually creamy white to pale yellow, sometimes with subtle greenish or pinkish tones, creating a striking contrast against the bare or sparsely leafed branches. These nocturnally opening blooms are adapted for pollination by bats and other night-active pollinators in their natural habitat. Grown from seed, Adansonia za rewards patient growers with a truly iconic tree that embodies the wild landscapes of Madagascar and offers immense ornamental, botanical and collector value for both South African and international enthusiasts.
