Adromischus is a compact but irresistibly diverse genus of leaf-succulent “miniatures” in the stonecrop family, Crassulaceae. The name comes from Greek, with adros meaning “thick” and mischos “stem”, a nod to the chunky little stems that anchor their often bizarre leaves.

All recognised species are endemic to southern Africa, mainly South Africa with some reaching into Namibia, where they inhabit rocky slopes, cliff faces and arid shrublands in both winter- and summer-rainfall regions.

Despite their small size, Adromischus offer tremendous variety: leaves can be spotted or plain, triangular or spindle-shaped, chalky white or deep green, smooth or heavily textured. Many species are cespitose, forming tight mats or clusters of short stems that slowly spread over time.

Their flowers are usually slender, tubular spikes in shades of green, white and pink – modest compared with their leaves, but invaluable for section and species identification. For collectors and beginners alike, they are famously easy to propagate from single leaves, making them ideal subjects for experimentation and sharing.

For South African growers, Adromischus bring the magic of the Karoo and Cape mountains onto a sunny stoep or windowsill. Internationally, they are perfect for bright indoor collections and under-glass culture, thriving in small pots of very gritty mix and tolerating a wide range of climates as long as they are kept dry and well-lit. Their compact size, drought tolerance and fascinating variation also make them excellent subjects for seed-grown collections, where every seedling can show its own unique patterning or leaf shape.

Adromischus alstonii (Adromischus pulchellus, Adromischus subrubellus, Adromischus triebneri, Cotyledon alstonii) – Bulbees

Adromischus alstonii is a rugged, upright-growing stonecrop from the dry borderlands of Namibia and the Northern and Western Cape, where it clings to rocky outcrops from the Richtersveld and Namaqualand southwards to around Garies.

It forms a many-branched, shrubby succulent up to about 30 cm tall, tucking itself into crevices or beneath small shrubs for protection from harsh desert sun and wind. In habitat it experiences dazzling light, long dry spells and surprisingly cool nights – all conditions it takes in its stride in cultivation.

The stems of A. alstonii are grey to grey-green, with peeling bark on older growth, and carry substantial, flat, grey leaves that can be handsomely marked with purple blotches when grown in strong light.

Leaves may reach about 8 cm long and 4 cm wide, creating a chunky, architectural plant even at a relatively small size. In mid-summer it sends up tall, slender inflorescences that can reach about half a metre, topped with tubular green-brown calyces and white to blush-pink, triangular petals – understated but elegant when viewed up close.

From seed, Adromischus alstonii is a superb choice for both South African and international growers who appreciate bold, sculptural succulents. In hotter, drier parts of South Africa it can be grown outdoors in a sharply-drained rockery; in cooler or wetter climates worldwide, it excels in pots under cover, where its leaves will wrinkle slightly to tell you when it needs water. A very gritty mix, bright light and a cool, drier winter rest help seedlings develop strong stems and good colour, making this species a resilient and rewarding subject for long-term collections.
