Aloe bargalensis – Bargal Aloe

Aloe bargalensis is a truly rare collector’s treasure from the remote Bargal region of northern Somalia, where it clings to steep rocky slopes overlooking the Indian Ocean. This compact species forms tight rosettes of narrow, upright leaves in a beautiful blend of blue-grey and fresh green, delicately patterned with fine longitudinal striping and irregular mottling, just as shown in our photographs. The leaves are smooth and firm with small, evenly spaced teeth along the margins, giving the plant a refined but still unmistakably “wild” look. In habitat the rosettes sit close to the ground on rocky ledges, perfectly adapted to intense sun, wind and long dry spells.

When mature, Aloe bargalensis sends up slender flower stalks topped with dense clusters of tubular blooms in glowing coral-red to orange tones, sometimes with softer greenish tips. Against the cool, marbled foliage these vivid flower spikes are eye-catching beacons for sunbirds and other pollinators. In its home range the species usually flowers in the cooler, drier months, and in cultivation you can expect the main flowering flush from late winter into spring under warm, bright conditions. The contrast of fiery flowers and elegant, striped leaves makes this one of the most striking small aloes you can add to a collection.

Native to a very limited area of the Horn of Africa, Aloe bargalensis grows on arid, stony hillsides and limestone outcrops where drainage is perfect and rainfall scarce.
