The foliage has a distinctive glaucous sheen, dotted and shaded in places, with sharp but finely proportioned teeth along the margins that catch the light and highlight the elegant outline of each leaf.

In season, mature plants send up slender, purplish flower stems well above the foliage, ending in airy spikes packed with small, tubular blooms.
