Aloe is one of the most captivating succulent genera on Earth, celebrated for its bold architectural rosettes, resilient nature, and spectacular seasonal flower displays. From neat, miniature species that tuck themselves into rocky crevices to dramatic, stem-forming giants that dominate dry hillsides, aloes bring an unmistakable sense of place—sunlit, water-wise, and wonderfully wild—wherever they are grown.

What truly sets Aloe apart is the combination of sculptural foliage and nectar-rich blooms. The leaves range from smooth and glaucous to spotted, toothed, and richly textured, often changing colour with sun, drought, or cool weather. Aloe integra

Aloe integra is a beautifully understated “grassland aloe” that rewards close attention: a compact, deep-green rosette with clean, mostly entire leaf margins (the feature behind its name), set low to the ground and often forming small groups over time. The leaves are triangular and neatly tapering, glossy to lightly lined, with older tips naturally drying back in a way that gives the plant a rugged, wild character rather than a manicured look.

In habitat this species occurs in the northern parts of Eswatini and the eastern escarpment of South Africa’s Mpumalanga, where it grows among short grass on exposed rocky slopes at roughly mid–high elevation. That origin shows in its temperament; Aloe integra is happiest in bright sun, sharp drainage, and a mineral, stony soil profile that dries quickly after rain, making it a superb choice for rock gardens, crevice plantings, and collectors’ troughs in both South African and Mediterranean-style climates.

When in flower, it becomes a small beacon: a single, upright stalk topped by a dense, pyramidal head of tubular blooms in vivid yellow tones, from lemon-yellow to a brighter canary shade. These nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for pollinators and add a crisp vertical accent above the tight rosette – especially striking against natural stone, sparse grass, and other low, unobtrusive companions.
