The Asparagus genus, of the family Asparagaceae with up to 300 species native from Siberia to southern Africa, is best known for the garden asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), cultivated as a vegetable for its succulent spring stalks. Several African species are grown as ornamental plants.
Asparagus declinatus, synonymously known as Asparagus crispus, Asparagus decumbens or Myrsiphyllum declinatum and commonly known as Kruilkransie in Afrikaans and Bridal Veil Asparagus or Weeping Asparagus in English, is a South African indigenous delicate low-growing plant with fine-textured deep soft-green needle-shaped leaves that densely cover slightly-zigzagging slender stems that arch upward then cascade downward. In late spring into summer appear small white drooping flowers that are followed by little spherical berries that turn from green to whitish.
