Acorus calamus or Sweet Flag as it is commonly known is a grass like, aromatic perennial with long, narrow, erect leaves rising to a height of 150cm. This plant emerges from the water with a 2-edged stalk, with an outward-jutting club-like spadix bearing tiny, greenish-yellow flowers. The root stocks of this aromatic plant are used as a natural insecticide and an ingredient of perfumes! The rootstocks were once used as a food additive as well. The root (rhizome) is used to make medicine. Despite safety concerns, calamus is used for gastrointestinal (GI) problems including ulcers, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), intestinal gas (flatulence), upset stomach and loss of appetite (anorexia). Habitats include sedge meadows that are prone to flooding, edges of small lakes and ponds, marshes, swamps, seeps and springs, and wetland restorations.
