Asparagus is a genus in the plant family Asparagaceae, subfamily Asparagoideae. It comprises up to 300 species. Most are evergreen long-lived perennial plants growing from the understory as lianas, bushes or climbing plants. The best-known species is the edible Asparagus officinalis, commonly referred to as just asparagus. Other members of the genus are grown as ornamental plants. Ornamental species such as Asparagus plumosus, Asparagus aethiopicus, Asparagus setaceus and Asparagus virgatus are finely branched and are misleadingly known as “asparagus fern”.

Asparagus falcatus, commonly known as Large Forest Asparagus, Thorny Creeper, Sicklethorn and Yellowwood Asparagus in English and Doringtou in Afrikaans, is a captivating evergreen climbing shrub native to South Africa. It thrives in the forested regions of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and beyond, gracefully reaching heights of up to 7 meters. Characterized by its distinctive curved thorns and glossy, sickle-shaped leaves, this plant not only adds beauty but also provides security. Its sharp thorns make it an excellent choice for creating a protective hedge, while its striking white flowers, which bloom from September to December, release a fragrant sweetness that attracts pollinators.

The plant produces small, red berries, which are cherished by birds that help disperse its seeds. Easy to grow, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers shaded environments but can tolerate partial sunlight. It can be propagated from seed, which germinates within 2-3 weeks. Asparagus falcatus is also recognized for its medicinal properties in traditional African medicine, where its leaves and stems are used as poultices for swelling.

Ideal for hanging over pergolas or fences, this fast-growing plant can reach impressive growth rates of up to 50mm per day, making it a perfect addition to gardens that seek both aesthetic appeal and functional protection. Whether used as an ornamental or a natural barrier, Asparagus falcatus is a versatile and resilient choice for any garden.
