Nemesia is a genus of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs, belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family, which are native to sandy coasts or disturbed ground in South Africa. Numerous hybrids have been selected, and the annual cultivars are popular with gardeners as bedding plants. In temperate regions they are usually treated as half-hardy, grown from seed in heat, and planted out after all danger of frost has passed. The flowers are two-lipped, with the upper lip consisting of four lobes and the lower lip two lobes.
Nemesia barabata, synonymously known as Antirrhinum barbatum or Nemesia guthriei and commonly known as Bearded Nemesia in English and Bloubekkie, Bloukappertjie, Blouselblommetjie, Ferweeltjie or Fluweeltjie in Afrikaans, is a South African endemic species found in the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. This eye-catching annual has stems that are simple or branched. The leaves are opposite, oval and toothed. The flowers are in compact racemes and are white to cream with sky-blue to deep purple lower lips and raised hairy palates.
