Berzelia is a genus consisting of 12 species of upright, wiry stemmed, evergreen shrubs with a dense covering of small, fine, needle-like leaves. The flowers which appear in spring and summer, are minute but are packed in spherical clusters, of which there are several per head of bloom. The flowers are white to cream and, because the stamens extend beyond the tiny petals, the flower heads appear to be studded with protrusions. In cultivation, they are best grown in light well-drained growing medium with adequate moisture, positioning in full sun. Light trimming will retain the compact form after flowering. Most species are easily propagated from seed or small half-hardened tip cuttings.

Berzelia cordifolia

Synonyms: sometimes listed historically under Brunia in older literature; currently accepted as Berzelia cordifolia. Native to the southern Overberg—especially the Bredasdorp and Swellendam districts—in the Cape Provinces of South Africa.

A graceful, evergreen fynbos shrub with fine, imbricate leaves that cloak each stem like soft green scales. The growing tips carry rounded clusters of tiny tubular florets that open a clean, creamy white, creating polished, button-like heads above the foliage. With age, the heads gain warm straw to blush tones as seeds set, extending the display well beyond peak bloom.

In gardens, B. cordifolia thrives in full sun, freely draining, acidic sands, and benefits from low-phosphorus feeding like other fynbos. Expect the best flush of flowers in spring into early summer, aligning with the main flowering window for many Berzelia species in the Western Cape. These long, straight, textural stems suit floristry, bridal work and dried arrangements, and the neat habit makes a refined companion to proteas, pincushions and restios in indigenous plantings.
