Sparaxis is a genus in the Iridaceae family that is endemic to South Africa and found mostly in the southwestern Cape and the western Karoo.
Sparaxis grandiflora ssp acutiloba is a rare South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province where it can be found growing in Fynbos and Succulent Karoo on damp clay banks and hills in the Olifants River Valley between Vredendal and Citrusdal. Vernacular names include Botterlelie, Fluweelblom and Fluweeltjie. It grows from 8cm to 25cm tall and in spring it bears bright yellow long-lasting flowers. Sparaxis is a winter-growing, summer-dormant genus. For this reason, plant the seeds or corms in autumn between late March and early June. Sparaxis is recommended for cultivation in both gardens and containers.
