Buddleja is a wonderfully charismatic genus of flowering shrubs and small trees in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, celebrated for its long, nectar-rich flower clusters and its easy, airy garden presence. The genus contains more than 100 species and has a broad native range stretching across tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, Africa, Madagascar and Asia. The name honours the English botanist and clergyman Rev. Adam Buddle, and the plants are especially admired for their fragrant blooms and their ability to draw in butterflies and other visiting insects.
Buddleja dysophylla (Chilianthus dysophyllus) – White Climbing-Sage, White Climbing Sagewood, White Climbing Sage; Witranksalie, Wit-Ranksalie, Witranksaliehout
Buddleja dysophylla, the white climbing sagewood, is a wonderfully characterful species for growers who appreciate wild beauty with real garden presence. Native from the Eastern Cape in South Africa northwards to Tanzania, and occurring in South Africa in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, this species brings an authentic southern African feel to any collection. In habitat it grows along forest margins, in scrub forest and bush, on rocky mountain slopes, and in riverine vegetation, which gives it the rugged yet graceful character that makes it so appealing to collectors and indigenous plant enthusiasts alike.
This is a large scrambling shrub, and at times a small tree, with a naturally spreading, climbing habit that gives it a relaxed, untamed elegance. The foliage is especially attractive, with broad triangular to ovate leaves, irregularly toothed or scalloped margins, and a softly textured look created by the contrast between the greener upper surface and the paler, hairier undersides. True to the look of the plant shown above, Buddleja dysophylla has a distinctly wild, textured leaf character that pairs beautifully with its frothy flowering display.
The flowers are one of this species’ real highlights. Buddleja dysophylla bears masses of small, sweet-scented, creamy-white to white flowers, often with a subtle reddish-brown centre, carried in large, loose heads at the ends of the branches. In habitat it flowers from autumn through winter into spring, mainly from May to September, making it an exceptionally valuable species for adding brightness and fragrance during the cooler months. Its flowers are also attractive to bees and butterflies, adding even more life and movement to the garden.
For South African gardeners, international growers, collectors, and lovers of unusual flowering shrubs, Buddleja dysophylla is a rewarding and distinctive choice with real ornamental charm. It offers fragrance, soft white bloom, handsome foliage, and a naturally graceful scrambling habit that sets it apart from more conventional shrubs.
