Cassia is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae, and the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Species are known commonly as cassias. Species of the genera Senna and Chamaecrista were previously included in Cassia. Cassia are usually mid-sized to tall trees. There are hundreds of Cassia species, but it is unclear just how many. One estimate stands at 692. The genus was a wastebasket taxon for a long time, used to classify plants that did not fit well anywhere else. Over 1000 species have belonged to Cassia over the years. Many taxa have since been transferred to more appropriate genera, such as Senna.

Cassia renigera, synonymously known as Cassia javanica subsp. renigera and commonly known as Burmese Pink Cassia, is a spectacular deciduous ornamental garden and roadside tree of up to 6 meters tall. Native to Myanmar but widely cultivated in Asia for its attractive, pinnate foliage and bright pink, orchid-like flowers that are borne in spring and summer. It is best grown in full sun or part shade and is said to be hardy to USDA zone 9b, and possibly colder. It is used medicinally as a substitute to Cassia fistula for treating constipation, colic, chlorosis and urinary disorders. Its leaves are effective against herpes simplex and the bark is one of the ingredients in ayurvedic and other traditional medicine antidiabetic formulations. It yields a lightweight to heavy hardwood that is used for general construction, furniture and cabinet making. The bark is used for tanning in the leather processing industry.
