Calpurnia is a small, showy genus in the pea family (Fabaceae), best known in South Africa for the striking “wild laburnums” or “golden peas” that light up forest margins and bushveld with cascades of yellow blossom. These are graceful shrubs to small trees, typically multi-stemmed, with soft, imparipinnate leaves and the classic pea-shaped flowers carried in drooping racemes. In the wild, Calpurnia species occur from the Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal and the northern provinces, and further north into tropical Africa and even southern India, where they favour forest edges, kloofs, riverbanks and moist bushveld.

For South African gardeners, the best-known representative is Calpurnia aurea (wild laburnum, geelkeur), a hardy, fast-growing shrub or small tree that quickly forms a graceful, emerald-green canopy. From about its second year it begins to produce generous, pendulous bunches of brilliant yellow, sweetly attractive flowers, often from November through to March, with scattered blooms appearing for much of the year in warm regions. These nectar-rich sprays are highly attractive to carpenter bees and other pollinators, and are followed by thin, papery, straw-coloured pods that rustle in the breeze and add texture to the plant well into winter.

Calpurnia species make excellent subjects for indigenous and wildlife-friendly gardens in South Africa. They thrive in full sun to semi-shade, respond well to pruning, and are tolerant of frost and periods of drought once established, especially when planted in well-drained, compost-rich soil. In smaller gardens they can be maintained as large shrubs or multi-stemmed feature plants, while in larger landscapes they are superb along watercourses, on embankments, or as informal screening. With their luminous yellow flowers, quick growth and strong ecological value, Calpurnia species offer an easy, rewarding way to bring a splash of African forest and bushveld into any South African garden.

Calpurnia sericea – Mountain Wild Laburnum (Berggeelkeurboom)

Calpurnia sericea, the Mountain wild laburnum or Berggeelkeurboom, is a striking, high-altitude shrub from the Drakensberg and adjacent mountains of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. In its natural habitat it grows on rocky slopes, stream banks and grassland edges at elevations of roughly 1 400–2 600 m, where winter snow, mist and strong winds are common. This makes it a perfect candidate for cooler South African gardens wanting an indigenous, frost-hardy focal shrub.

The species name “sericea” refers to the silky hairs that cover the leaves and young shoots. The pinnate leaves carry numerous small leaflets that are softly grey-green and slightly velvety to the touch, giving the whole plant a silvered, mountain-adapted appearance. Mature shrubs are densely branched and can reach around 2 m in height, sometimes more with age, forming a rounded, bushy outline that fits easily into mixed indigenous beds, rockeries and naturalistic grassland plantings.

In spring and early summer, Calpurnia sericea produces masses of slender racemes filled with small, bright yellow flowers, often with a touch of orange or rusty shading in the banner petal. The profusion of blooms completely transforms the shrub into a glowing yellow beacon that draws in bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Once the flowering flush subsides, narrow pods develop and ripen through summer, providing a ready source of seed for collection. For South African gardeners on the Highveld, in the Drakensberg foothills or any cooler region, C. sericea offers a resilient, water-wise, cold-tolerant “wild laburnum” that brings both beauty and biodiversity into the garden.
