Calpurnia is a small, showy genus in the pea family (Fabaceae), best known in South Africa for the striking “wild laburnums” or “golden peas” that light up forest margins and bushveld with cascades of yellow blossom. These are graceful shrubs to small trees, typically multi-stemmed, with soft, imparipinnate leaves and the classic pea-shaped flowers carried in drooping racemes. In the wild, Calpurnia species occur from the Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal and the northern provinces, and further north into tropical Africa and even southern India, where they favour forest edges, kloofs, riverbanks and moist bushveld.

Calpurnia woodii, the Woolly wild laburnum or Wollerige geelkeurboom, is an eye-catching shrub or small tree endemic to South Africa, with its stronghold in KwaZulu-Natal and adjoining provinces. It is usually found on rocky hillsides, grassland margins and open bushveld where it enjoys full sun and well-drained soils. Named in honour of the botanist John Medley Wood, this species combines toughness with ornamental appeal, making it an excellent addition to indigenous and wildlife-friendly gardens.

The plant is easily recognised by its softly hairy leaves and young stems. The pinnate foliage is composed of numerous oval to slightly elongated leaflets, each covered in fine hairs that give the leaves a velvety, grey-green look and a silvery sheen in bright light. Mature specimens often develop into dense, rounded shrubs or small trees around 3–4 m tall, with multiple stems and an attractive branching structure that provides shelter and nesting sites for small birds.

In late spring and throughout summer, Calpurnia woodii puts on a generous floral display. Long, upright to slightly arching racemes emerge from the branch tips, packed with small, golden-yellow flowers that often show subtle reddish speckling on the banner petal. The woolly calyces and young pods add extra texture, making the inflorescences particularly striking at close range. These flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, attracting honeybees, solitary bees and a range of insects, which in turn draw insect-eating birds into the garden. As the pods mature and dry, they rattle in the breeze and release seed that can easily be sown to raise new plants.
