Euclea is a group of flowering plants, belonging to family Ebenaceae, the ebony family, described as a genus by Linnaeus in 1774. It includes evergreen trees and shrubs, native to Africa, the Comoro Islands, and Arabia. Several species are used for timber, producing a hard, dark heartwood timber similar to ebony.
Euclea pseudebenus commonly known as Cape Ebony or Ebony Guarri in English and Ebbehout-Ghwarrie in Afrikaans is a tree native to Angola, Namibia and indigenous to South Africa where it can be found growing in the Cape Province. It is classified as a protected tree in South Africa. It grows into a compact tree of 3 to 10 meters tall with many stems and slender drooping branches. It has greenish flowers during spring which are followed by edible fruit. It has ebony-like timber and is good for bees.
