Cephalophyllum is a captivating genus of low-growing, mat-forming to trailing succulent plants in the Aizoaceae, the ice plant or vygie family. These hardy little jewels are strongly associated with the winter-rainfall regions of western South Africa and extend northwards into south-western Namibia, with many species adapted to open, stony, sandy, or renosterveld and fynbos habitats where rainfall is seasonal and drainage is sharp. The name Cephalophyllum comes from Greek words meaning “head” and “leaf”, referring to the compact, head-like clusters of succulent leaves produced by many species. In cultivation, the genus is loved for its neat creeping habit, drought tolerance, and brilliant daisy-like flowers, which may be yellow, red, orange, pink, purple or bicoloured depending on the species, often opening in the brighter part of the day to attract pollinators.

Cephalophyllum numeesense (Cephalophyllum herrei decumbens)

Cephalophyllum numeesense is a superb little South African vygie for collectors who appreciate compact, beautifully detailed mesembs with striking flower colour. Belonging to the Aizoaceae family, this species is associated with the arid north-western Cape and Richtersveld region, an area famous for mineral soils, quartz-strewn flats, stark desert light and an extraordinary diversity of succulent plants.

This attractive species forms small, low-growing tufts of fleshy, finger-like to club-shaped leaves, clustered tightly into a compact succulent body. The leaves are green to slightly grey-green, rounded and smooth, with a sturdy, water-storing form that gives the plant a neat, sculptural appearance. In cultivation it is especially appealing in shallow pots, bowls and specialist mesemb collections, where gritty mineral soil and decorative gravel show off its compact shape beautifully.

The flowers are a highlight of Cephalophyllum numeesense, opening as bright golden-yellow, daisy-like blooms with warm orange to red-tinted petal tips. This subtle bicoloured effect gives the flowers a glowing, sunlit appearance, especially against the darker green succulent leaves. Flowering is best associated with the cooler growing season into winter and spring, when many arid-zone South African mesembs respond to seasonal moisture and bright light.

For South African growers, this is a rewarding species for sunny succulent collections, dry rockeries, raised planters and container displays where drainage is sharp and watering is controlled. International growers can enjoy it in bright windowsills, cool greenhouses, alpine houses or under strong grow lights, using a mineral-rich, free-draining mix and careful seasonal watering. Sow in autumn or under cool, bright conditions, keep lightly moist during germination, and then gradually increase airflow as seedlings establish.
