Cephalophyllum is a captivating genus of low-growing, mat-forming to trailing succulent plants in the Aizoaceae, the ice plant or vygie family. These hardy little jewels are strongly associated with the winter-rainfall regions of western South Africa and extend northwards into south-western Namibia, with many species adapted to open, stony, sandy, or renosterveld and fynbos habitats where rainfall is seasonal and drainage is sharp. The name Cephalophyllum comes from Greek words meaning “head” and “leaf”, referring to the compact, head-like clusters of succulent leaves produced by many species. In cultivation, the genus is loved for its neat creeping habit, drought tolerance, and brilliant daisy-like flowers, which may be yellow, red, orange, pink, purple or bicoloured depending on the species, often opening in the brighter part of the day to attract pollinators.

Cephalophyllum regale Bi-colour Flowered (Cephalophyllum vanheerdei)

Cephalophyllum regale Bi-colour Flowered is a spectacular South African vygie for collectors who want a small plant with dramatic, jewel-toned impact. Belonging to the Aizoaceae family, this striking species is associated with the Northern Cape, especially the Richtersveld region, where specialised leaf-succulent communities occur on quartz-rich and arid mineral landscapes.

This compact mesemb forms low, clustered growth with fleshy, finger-like succulent leaves in green to grey-green tones, often with subtle bronzy or purplish shading in strong light. The plant remains neat and sculptural, making it ideal for shallow bowls, bonsai-style pots, gritty succulent trays, alpine-house displays and specialist mesemb collections. Its compact habit and textured foliage give it year-round appeal, even before the flowers appear.

The bi-colour flowers are the true showpiece: vivid orange-red to copper-red daisy-like blooms with glowing yellow centres and darker stamens, creating a rich flame-coloured display above the succulent foliage. The colour contrast is exceptional, with the warm yellow throat blending outward into fiery orange and red petals. Flowering is best associated with the cooler growing season, particularly winter into spring, when many South African mesembs respond to seasonal moisture, bright light and mild temperatures.

For South African growers, this is a rewarding choice for sunny succulent collections, dry rockeries, raised planters and container displays where drainage is sharp and watering is carefully controlled. International growers can enjoy it in bright windowsills, cool greenhouses, alpine houses or under strong grow lights, using a mineral-rich, free-draining medium and excellent airflow. Sow in autumn or under cool, bright conditions, keep the seed tray lightly moist until germination, and then gradually increase ventilation as seedlings establish.
