Rudbeckia amplexicaulis or Clasping Coneflower as it is commonly known is an annual plant with elongated, bluish, waxy leaves that generally clasp around the stem at the base. It is native to the southeastern United States. The flower heads are similar to those of black-eyed susans, but are smaller (mostly 2.5-5cm in diameter). The yellow outer “petals” droop as the flowers mature, and the cylindrical black centre is elongated up to 5cm in length. The plant prefers full sun in various soil conditions. It often forms dense colonies in moist areas, and it is a very heavy re-seeder. The plant is good as a cut flower. The plant attracts butterflies, bees, and birds.
