Crassula is one of the most fascinating succulent genera in cultivation, loved for the sheer range of forms it offers. Within the genus you find everything from tiny moss-like annuals and dwarf crevice dwellers to neat rosettes, stacked columnar plants, trailing growers and even shrub-sized species such as the well-known jade plant. Southern Africa is the heartland of the genus, with around 149 species recorded there, although Crassula as a genus is far wider-ranging and native on a cosmopolitan scale.

What makes Crassula especially compelling for growers is that it combines beauty with resilience. Many species are adapted to drought through succulent leaves and stems, and the genus is closely associated with CAM photosynthesis, a water-saving strategy in which the stomata open mainly at night rather than in the heat of the day. That is one reason why so many species thrive in water-wise gardens, containers, rockeries and specialist succulent collections.

For collectors, the genus offers endless variety in texture, colour and habit. Some species blush red in stronger light, some stay silver-blue or soft green, some form cushions, some stack into pagoda-like towers, and others disappear into the landscape as miniatures. For gardeners, Crassula is equally valuable because many species are adaptable, compact and rewarding from seed, making them ideal for both South African growers and international hobbyists looking to build a diverse succulent collection.

Crassula corallina ssp. corallina (Crassula dasyphylla, Crassula corallina) – Hasiekos

Crassula corallina ssp. corallina is one of those miniature succulents that stops collectors in their tracks. Small, intricate and beautifully textured, it forms low, spreading perennial clusters with short procumbent branches that root as they creep, gradually building a dense, coral-like patch of tightly packed growth. The leaves are tiny, obovate to elliptic, fleshy and verruculose, often coated in a pale white waxy bloom that gives the plant its distinctive frosted grey-green to grey-brown look. In a well-grown specimen, the effect is wonderfully sculptural, with compact upright tips and a refined, almost beaded appearance that makes it especially appealing to succulent enthusiasts and collectors of miniature Crassulas.

This subspecies occurs naturally in southern Namibia and across parts of South Africa, including the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State. In habitat it grows on sandy soils, often where surface limestone is present, or in shallow soil over granite and dolerite, in open dry country ranging from karroid shrubland to grassland. That broad natural range, together with its neat size and strong character, makes it an exciting offering for both South African growers wanting a plant with true regional authenticity and international buyers looking for a distinctive southern African collector’s succulent.

When in flower, Crassula corallina ssp. corallina adds another layer of charm. The blooms are white to cream, carried in small terminal clusters, with softly recurved lobes and yellow anthers that sit beautifully above the textured foliage. In habitat it flowers mainly from December to April, bringing a delicate seasonal display to a plant already prized for its compact form. The flowering heads remain nicely in proportion to the plant body, so even in bloom it keeps its tidy, jewel-like presence.

For seed buyers, this is a superb species to raise for miniature succulent pots, troughs, collector’s benches and specialist displays. Its naturally clustered habit, frosted leaf texture and neat cream-toned flowers give it year-round interest, while its southern African origin adds real appeal for serious growers and hobbyists alike.
