Crassula is one of the most fascinating succulent genera in cultivation, loved for the sheer range of forms it offers. Within the genus you find everything from tiny moss-like annuals and dwarf crevice dwellers to neat rosettes, stacked columnar plants, trailing growers and even shrub-sized species such as the well-known jade plant. Southern Africa is the heartland of the genus, with around 149 species recorded there, although Crassula as a genus is far wider-ranging and native on a cosmopolitan scale.

What makes Crassula especially compelling for growers is that it combines beauty with resilience. Many species are adapted to drought through succulent leaves and stems, and the genus is closely associated with CAM photosynthesis, a water-saving strategy in which the stomata open mainly at night rather than in the heat of the day. That is one reason why so many species thrive in water-wise gardens, containers, rockeries and specialist succulent collections.

For collectors, the genus offers endless variety in texture, colour and habit. Some species blush red in stronger light, some stay silver-blue or soft green, some form cushions, some stack into pagoda-like towers, and others disappear into the landscape as miniatures. For gardeners, Crassula is equally valuable because many species are adaptable, compact and rewarding from seed, making them ideal for both South African growers and international hobbyists looking to build a diverse succulent collection.

Crassula cordata (Crassula aitonii, Crassula glauca, Crassula neglecta, Crassula perfossa) – Heart-leaved Crassula

Crassula cordata is a charming, character-filled South African succulent that wins collectors over with its compact habit, softly rounded foliage and delicate sprays of starry flowers. This is a species with real personality: neat enough for specialist collections, attractive enough for decorative containers, and easy to admire whether you are a serious succulent grower, a rock garden enthusiast or a hobbyist looking for something unusual and rewarding from seed.

Endemic to South Africa, Crassula cordata occurs from the south-eastern Eastern Cape through to KwaZulu-Natal, where it grows in dry shrub vegetation, on cliffs, in moist gullies and ravines, and often beneath trees or shrubs in sheltered spots. That natural range gives it a broad appeal for South African growers wanting an authentic indigenous species, while international collectors will appreciate it as a distinctive habitat plant from one of the world’s richest succulent regions.

This species forms low, softly spreading to trailing clusters of short stems dressed in rounded to heart-shaped leaves. The foliage is usually grey-green to blue-green, often prettily edged in red and marked with fine speckling or tiny pores that can deepen in colour under brighter, drier conditions. When in bloom, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying loose clusters of small star-shaped flowers. The blooms are typically cream to white, often tinged pink, with deeper pink buds that add extra colour and elegance. In habitat, flowering is mainly from winter into spring, often around July to October.

For seed growers, Crassula cordata is an excellent choice for miniature succulent displays, shaded rockeries, troughs and collector pots where its compact, leafy stems and airy flowers can really be appreciated. It brings a softer, more natural woodland-and-cliff character than many harsher desert succulents, making it a lovely addition to a diverse collection.
