Cylindrophyllum is one of those distinctly South African mesemb genera that looks almost too sculptural to be real. Part of the Aizoaceae (the vygie family), these succulents are endemic to the Little Karoo and neighbouring dry interior valleys, where winter rain, blazing sun and stony soils shape everything that survives there.

The name literally points to what they do best: “cylindrical leaves.” Each plant carries clusters of thick, finger-like leaves that act as water tanks, often coated in a pale, glaucous bloom to reflect heat. In habitat they blend into quartz flats and shale rubble, but in a pot or rock garden they read like living sea-creatures — tidy, bold forms that stay attractive even when not in flower.

When the season is right, Cylindrophyllum rewards growers with classic mesemb daisies — usually white, cream or yellow-toned, with a bright central eye — appearing mainly from spring into early summer after the winter growth push. Many species follow a winter-growing rhythm with a slower, more resting phase through the hottest part of summer, which makes them especially well-suited to South African waterwise gardens and container collections.

Cylindrophyllum hallii – Noors Fingerfig

Cylindrophyllum hallii is a hardy, charismatic finger-vygie from the arid southern interior, prized by collectors for its strong form and dependable nature. While not widely known by a single established common name, it’s often described simply as a “finger vygie” in the same charming vein as its relatives — a perfect shorthand for those chunky, upright leaf clusters.

This species develops dense tufts of smooth, stout cylindrical leaves, usually a soft green to glaucous grey-green, with attractive pink-to-reddish tips when grown in brighter light. Over time it expands into a neat, cushiony shrublet that looks tidy year-round. In South African gardens it excels in pots, raised rockeries, and any xeric bed where water drains fast and roots can breathe.

Come spring, C. hallii throws cheerful mesemb daisies in creamy yellow to golden tones (matching reference plants), creating a striking contrast against the cool leaf colour. Expect flowering mainly from spring into early summer after winter growth, especially where plants receive full sun and a proper winter-rainfall style watering rhythm. It’s a terrific choice for growers who want a true Karoo species that stays compact, flowers freely, and shrugs off heat once established.
