Cymbidium is one of the great classical orchid genera, treasured for its elegant arching foliage, bold flower spikes and long-lasting blooms that can bring colour, fragrance and refinement to a collection for many weeks at a time. Belonging to the orchid family, Orchidaceae, the genus is widely known as the boat orchid, a name inspired by the distinctive shape of the floral lip in many species. It is a genus that bridges the worlds of serious orchid collecting, florist-quality display plants and rewarding long-term cultivation.

Native mainly across tropical, subtropical and temperate parts of Asia, with several species extending into northern Australia, Cymbidium includes terrestrial, lithophytic and epiphytic orchids. This diversity gives the genus remarkable character: some species grow among leaf litter and humus on forest floors, others anchor into rock crevices, while others live on trees in bright, airy habitats. Their growth is typically sympodial, forming clusters of pseudobulbs topped by long, narrow, leathery leaves that create handsome, fountain-like plants even when not in flower.

The flowers are the real spectacle. Cymbidium blooms may be green, cream, yellow, white, pink, bronze, brown, maroon or richly suffused with contrasting markings. Many carry a beautifully patterned lip, and some species are prized for fragrance as much as form. In bloom, a well-grown plant can look both architectural and luxurious, with upright or arching spikes carrying numerous waxy flowers that often last far longer than many other orchid blooms.

For South African growers, Cymbidium can be especially rewarding in cooler, bright regions or in well-managed shadehouse conditions where summer heat is moderated and autumn to winter nights are cool. For international growers, the genus offers options for cool, intermediate and warmer climates, especially when species and hybrids are chosen carefully. From classic large-flowered hybrids to refined Asian species and miniature types, Cymbidium remains a genus with immense appeal for collectors, gardeners and orchid enthusiasts who enjoy plants with presence, patience and seasonal drama.

Cymbidium crassifolium – Thick Leaved Cymbidium

Cymbidium crassifolium is a beautifully patterned species orchid for collectors who appreciate fine detail, graceful form and the unmistakable elegance of true botanical Cymbidiums. Its many star-shaped blooms, striped in deep maroon and creamy yellow, give the plant a refined yet dramatic presence, making it a superb choice for orchid enthusiasts, seed collectors and patient growers looking for something far more distinctive than ordinary garden hybrids.

Native from the Himalaya through southern China and into Indo-China, Cymbidium crassifolium occurs across a broad Asian range that includes regions such as Assam, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and southern China. In habitat it grows mainly as an epiphyte in subtropical conditions, where its roots enjoy filtered light, moving air, seasonal moisture and excellent drainage. For South African growers, it is best suited to a protected shadehouse or greenhouse with bright filtered light and good ventilation, while international growers can adapt it to warm-intermediate to intermediate orchid conditions.

The plant forms attractive clumps with pseudobulbs and long, strap-like green leaves that arch naturally and create a lush frame for the flowering stems. Mature plants can produce branching to arching sprays with numerous open flowers, giving a full and lively display. The blooms are narrow, starry and elegant, with creamy to pale yellow margins and rich maroon-red central striping through the petals and sepals. The lip is deep burgundy to maroon, often with small pale and yellow details near the throat, adding depth and contrast to each flower.

In habitat and under comparable growing conditions, Cymbidium crassifolium is associated with spring flowering, with records from April in parts of its range. When in bloom, a well-grown clump can create a striking display of many patterned flowers held among clean green foliage, combining warm colour, delicate markings and a naturally graceful orchid habit.

This seed offering is best suited to experienced growers, orchid collectors and propagation enthusiasts. Like most orchid seed, Cymbidium crassifolium seed is extremely fine and should be germinated using sterile flasking on a suitable orchid nutrient medium rather than sown like ordinary garden seed. For patient growers or those using specialist orchid propagation services, it offers the rewarding opportunity to raise a distinctive Asian Cymbidium species from seed and develop a unique batch of plants over time.
