These are mostly low, mat-forming succulents in the Aizoaceae, famous for their shimmering “ice” cells on the leaves and stems that catch the light like tiny crystals – a clever way of reflecting harsh African sun while storing precious moisture.

The genus is centred in southern Africa, with the bulk of species in South Africa and Lesotho, but stretching north into eastern Africa as far as Ethiopia and even into the Arabian Peninsula. Many are local endemics tied to specific rock types or mountain systems – from arid Karoo flats and grassland dolerite outcrops to subalpine Drakensberg cliffs. Seed capsules are typically hygrochastic: they open when wet, using little “valves” and wings to present or flick out the seed in rain – exactly the kind of detail that makes them fascinating subjects for a seed-focused collector.

In the garden, Delosperma species are valued for their carpets of daisy-like flowers in intense shades of magenta, pink, purple, yellow and orange, often over a very long season. Given full sun and sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soils, many species are remarkably drought tolerant and need little more than occasional watering once established. They are ideal for rockeries, retaining walls, containers, green roofs and banks where a tough, colourful, pollinator-friendly groundcover is needed.

Delosperma calycinum

Delosperma calycinum is another Eastern Cape endemic, native to rocky habitats where it forms low mats and small mounds among stones and shallow soils. Like its relatives, it is built for extremes: fleshy leaves store water against drought, while the root system anchors it securely into crevices that flood and dry repeatedly through the seasons. The plants carry cheerful, daisy-like flowers whose bright colours stand out against the muted tones of Eastern Cape veld.

In the garden, D. calycinum is a naturally compact groundcover, perfect for edging sunny paths, softening the front of retaining walls or weaving between stones in a rockery. Its spreading habit quickly covers bare soil, helping to keep weeds down while adding a carpet of texture. When in flower the whole patch becomes a miniature meadow of shining blooms that attract bees and other pollinators.

South African growers will find this species especially useful in coastal and inland Eastern Cape-style plantings, but it adapts well across much of the country where frost is not too severe. Plant it in full sun in a lean, gritty soil mix and avoid over-watering; these vygies prefer to dry out between drinks. From seed, it is uncomplicated: surface-sow the dust-fine seed, keep evenly moist until germination, and then gradually harden off seedlings to the bright, dry conditions they love.
