The genus is centred in southern Africa, with the bulk of species in South Africa and Lesotho, but stretching north into eastern Africa as far as Ethiopia and even into the Arabian Peninsula. In the garden, Delosperma species are valued for their carpets of daisy-like flowers in intense shades of magenta, pink, purple, yellow and orange, often over a very long season. Given full sun and sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soils, many species are remarkably drought tolerant and need little more than occasional watering once established. They are ideal for rockeries, retaining walls, containers, green roofs and banks where a tough, colourful, pollinator-friendly groundcover is needed.

Delosperma roseopurpureum

Delosperma roseopurpureum is a richly coloured vygie that, as the name suggests, bears rose to purple-toned flowers. It forms low mats of succulent foliage, hugging rocky or gravelly ground and filling gaps between stones.

In peak season, the plant is a mass of rose-pink to purple daisies, with narrow petals radiating around a lighter centre. The flowering period is typically spring into early summer, with sporadic blooms later in the season if plants have sufficient moisture.

In South African gardens, D. roseopurpureum is perfect for creating bold blocks of colour in rockeries and along paths. It responds best to full sun, well-drained, gritty soil and modest watering.
