The genus Dianthus – the famous “pinks” and “wild carnations” – brings together some of the toughest and most enchanting perennials you can add to a garden. From wind-scoured Drakensberg escarpments to misty Highveld grasslands and Cape sandstone slopes, southern African Dianthus species have evolved to cope with cold, wind, summer thunderstorms and long winter dry spells. In return they offer clouds of delicate, star-shaped flowers in shades of white, blush and vivid pink, often deliciously scented and loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Unlike their big florist cousins, these species remain neat, compact and easy to place. Most form small, evergreen clumps or cushions of narrow, often blue-green leaves that sit low against the soil, sending up wiry flowering stems in spring and summer. They are ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, retaining walls, containers and any sunny, well-drained corner where waterwise, cold-tolerant plants are needed. Once established they ask for very little, yet reward you year after year.

Dianthus caespitosus ssp. pectinatus – Tufted Comb-leaf Pink; Grashout, Grashoutjie

As its name suggests, Dianthus caespitosus ssp. pectinatus forms dense, cushion-like tufts, often wedged between rocks or on exposed slopes in high-rainfall grassland. The narrow leaves are arranged densely along short stems, giving the plant a neat, clipped look even when not in flower. This compact habit is perfect for rock gardens, slopes and gravel beds in South African gardens that receive summer rain and cold winters.

The subspecies bears attractive, usually pale pink to white flowers with petals whose edges are finely toothed or comb-like (pectinate), creating a delicate frilled effect. Each slender stem carries a single bloom that sits just above the mound of foliage. Flowering is mainly in summer, from November through January, when the plants can be covered in dainty stars.

In cultivation this species prefers full sun and cool, well-drained conditions. It handles frost extremely well and is best grown in sandy or gravelly loam, with regular but not excessive summer watering. It is an outstanding candidate for troughs, crevice gardens and the front of sunny borders, where its intricate flowers can be appreciated up close.
