The genus Dianthus – the famous “pinks” and “wild carnations” – brings together some of the toughest and most enchanting perennials you can add to a garden. From wind-scoured Drakensberg escarpments to misty Highveld grasslands and Cape sandstone slopes, southern African Dianthus species have evolved to cope with cold, wind, summer thunderstorms and long winter dry spells. In return they offer clouds of delicate, star-shaped flowers in shades of white, blush and vivid pink, often deliciously scented and loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Unlike their big florist cousins, these species remain neat, compact and easy to place. Most form small, evergreen clumps or cushions of narrow, often blue-green leaves that sit low against the soil, sending up wiry flowering stems in spring and summer. They are ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, retaining walls, containers and any sunny, well-drained corner where waterwise, cold-tolerant plants are needed. Once established they ask for very little, yet reward you year after year.

Dianthus zeyheri – Zeyher’s Pink, Drakensberg Wild Pink

Dianthus zeyheri is one of the showiest of the South African wild pinks. Found in montane grasslands and rocky slopes from the Drakensberg into the eastern Highveld, it forms compact clumps of narrow leaves that remain attractive all year. In midsummer it sends up strong, upright stems that carry large, brilliantly coloured flowers.

Blooms are typically a rich, bright pink to rosy magenta, with broad petals that are deeply and irregularly fringed, creating a dramatic, starburst effect. A well-grown plant in full flower can rival many cultivated border pinks, yet remains tough, frost-hardy and well adapted to local conditions. Flowering usually occurs from December through February.

In the garden D. zeyheri is perfect for sunny borders, mixed indigenous beds and naturalised grassland plantings. It thrives in cool to mild summer rainfall regions with well-drained soil and regular water in the growing season. Because of its size and colour intensity it makes an excellent focal plant among smaller grasses and perennials.
